Event tracking for interactions

Event tracking measures what visitors do on a page, such as downloads, videos, forms and clicks. A consistent schema keeps the data comparable.

Micro-conversions

Page views alone say little. The telling signals are downloaded data sheets, started videos and begun forms, and above all micro-conversions such as a completed configurator.

Consistent schema

In Google Analytics 4, every interaction is an event. To stop the same action appearing under three names, we define a schema in advance, based on the recommended GA4 events:

  • lower-case names with underscores, such as form_submit or file_download

  • defined parameters such as form name, file type or element position

  • custom dimensions in GA4 for the parameters being analysed

Technology

The website pushes interactions to the data layer, and Tag Manager forwards them to GA4 and other services. This is more robust than tracking via CSS classes, which change with the next redesign.

GA4 enhanced measurement already covers scrolls, downloads and outbound clicks. Single-page applications and configurators send their own events.

Testing and documentation

We test every event in preview mode and in GA4 DebugView. A tracking plan lists each event's trigger, parameters and purpose, so your team can extend the schema.

Automated tests check the key events after major releases.

Data protection

Events are captured only after consent, never form input or other personal content.
