Accessibility in a website redesign

Building accessibility to WCAG 2.2 AA into a redesign from the start costs far less than retrofitting it.

Background

Since 28 June 2025, the European Accessibility Act has applied to many consumer services, such as online shops. Germany implements it through the BFSG. Public bodies in Germany already follow BITV 2.0.

The benchmark

We work to WCAG 2.2 AA. This level covers the standard EN 301 549, which both the BFSG and BITV 2.0 reference. Whether the Act applies to you is for your legal advisers to assess.

Accessibility at every project stage

  • Planning: clear structure, understandable navigation, plain language where it helps

  • Design: contrast, text size, focus states and large touch targets

  • Development: semantic HTML, full keyboard operation, ARIA only where needed

  • Content: alt text, clear headings, accessible documents

Testing and evidence

We test with automated tools and by hand, because tools only catch some errors. That includes a keyboard and screen readers such as NVDA and VoiceOver. We document findings and fixes, so you can show where things stand. If needed, we write the accessibility statement.

Outcome

Accessibility is built into the design system, so new pages stay compliant too.
